The Elm Village Open Space (Upper Level) Community Garden has had a makeover for local residents and the community to grow, connect, and learn about gardening and horticulture.
We have been managing the community garden for almost two years now. During this time, our lead volunteer gardener, Phil, has been running weekly gardening and food-growing sessions designed to educate local residents about horticulture, with any surplus produce being donated to our Food Bank.
Over the years, neglect had taken its toll on the garden, resulting in damaged raised beds and an unsafe environment for users. However, through the generous support of Kusuma Trust, the community garden has undergone a stunning transformation. The trust’s funding enabled the construction of 34 brand-new raised beds, a custom-made compost bay, and the installation of a beautiful pergola entrance, perfect for plants to flourish. Move the slider below to see how the garden has changed since it’s makeover.

To celebrate the completion of renovations, we hosted an open day on Thursday, 3rd August, from 4 – 7 pm. Many local community members visited, along with local councillors, funders, staff and volunteers. Together we planted a variety of vegetables, including tomatoes and chillies and kale; enjoyed spotting butterflies; painted signs for our raised beds – injecting the garden with colour and creativity.
”It was a lovely afternoon with families and residents. We explored the garden, planted produce in the new raised bed and made the most of our new space. Fortunately, it didn't rain so we could enjoy ourselves outdoors.
