Three Years of Transforming Lives in Camden

Our latest evaluation shows how our free health and wellbeing programme is supporting people across Camden.

Our health & Wellbeing project, Health Haven isn‘t just about exercise classes or social activities; it’s about rebuilding the connections that make life meaningful when you’re managing long-term health challenges. It’s about discovering you can do more than you thought possible. It’s about having somewhere to belong.

A new evaluation covering three years of Health Haven (2022 – 2025) shows just how significant this impact has been. Since launching our programmenearly 300 Camden residents living with long-term health conditions have found support, connection, and new possibilities through Health Haven.

Who Health Haven is Reaching

The evaluation confirms we are reaching the people who need us most. Nearly 80% of our members are managing two or more long-term health conditions, from arthritis and diabetes to depression and chronic pain. One-third are unable to work due to their health, while another third are retired and at risk of social isolation.

GPs and Social Prescribers across Camden regularly refer patients to Health Haven when they need support that goes beyond medical treatment. These health professionals recognise that addressing loneliness, building confidence, and creating routine can be as important as medication for someone managing long-term conditions.

Health Haven is one of the first places I think of when I see patients with lots of different conditions. There's nothing like it in Camden at the moment.

The Difference We're Making

Better Physical Health: Members report noticeable improvements in fitness, strength, and balance. Those managing chronic conditions discover they can do more than they thought possible.
Improved Mental Wellbeing: When we surveyed members before and after joining, they reported feeling significantly more optimistic about the future, more useful, and better able to think clearly. Many describe feeling less stressed and anxious after sessions.
Lasting Friendships: Perhaps most powerfully, Health Haven creates real connections. Members meet for coffee between sessions, stay connected via WhatsApp groups, and gather for picnics and celebrations.
Growing Confidence: One member shared: “There are things that I didn’t do that I now do comfortably.” People surprised themselves, visiting museums they’d never gone to, travelling independently, or simply realising “actually, I can do it.”
Routine & Purpose:  Regular sessions provide structure and something to look forward to. As one member shared: “It gives me the routine of getting out of the house and meeting new people.”
Creative Expression: When members created collages about Health Haven, they reflected on connection, growth and transformation. One included the words “In Our Hands,” capturing how members feel about it.

What Makes Health Haven Work

It’s Free: This matters hugely for people unable to work due to health conditions. Health Haven removes the financial barriers of gyms, classes and cultural activities.

It’s Flexible: Drop-in sessions, online and in-person options, and no pressure if you miss or leave early.

There’s Something for Everyone: With 15+ activities, from Pilates and Tai Chi to book clubs, drama and museum visits, members can find what works for them.

Staff & Tutors Care: A warm welcome and adaptable sessions help people feel comfortable.

Members Shape the Programme. Health Haven is created with members. Their ideas inspire new activities, and volunteers help run sessions like our Community Cinema.

Looking Ahead:

This evaluation has also helped us identify opportunities to reach even more people by:

  • Creating more options for working adults through evening and weekend sessions
  • Expanding creative and cultural programming
  • Designing targeted support for neurodivergent individuals
  • Continuing engagement of under-represented groups, building on the success of our Men’s and Bengali Women’s Group

Why This Matters

Camden is the loneliest place in the UK, and life expectancy varies by 13 years between its richest and poorest neighbourhoods. Many people with long-term conditions struggle to access support that works for them.

Health Haven helps address the social determinants of health, connection, purpose and belonging that support wellbeing beyond medical care.

We’re building community resilience, reducing pressure on the NHS, and proving that person-centred, community-based support works.

As one member beautifully expressed: “It’s not only about physical health – it’s really stimulating on every level. It looks to improve all aspects of your mind, body and soul.”
