This week is Volunteers' Week: a chance to say thank you for the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK every day. Here at Castlehaven we are lucky to have a whole host of volunteers working across our different programmes and, via our Helping Hands scheme, out in the local community! This week we've been sharing some of their stories - we hope they'll inspire you to get started on a volunteering journey of your own!
Last but definitely not least: our final volunteer hero for this week is Elsie! Elsie started volunteering at Castlehaven after Jennifer (who ran our Under 5s drop-in) suggested she get involved. “I gained a lot from this, and when the scheme ended I was asked if I wanted to continue! I now help on the Ageactivity project.”
Like a lot of our volunteers, Elsie got involved with volunteering at CCA because she wanted to give something back to her community, and to an organisation that she had a personal connection with. “It’s nice to give something back. I used the Castlehaven drop-in when my son was little, and he loved it. It was nice to see other little people have as much fun as he did!”
One of Elsie’s favourite things about volunteering at CCA is getting to be part of the team “All the staff are so lovely and make you feel appreciated for giving any time.”
Volunteering has also enabled Elsie to gain new skills and improve existing ones “It’s been good to learn to use the computer for something other than shopping! I’ve always felt supported to do things that I’m not confident at.”
And her advice for anyone thinking of volunteering? “Please do it! I get so much from being at CCA and it makes me feel great knowing I’m able to help”.
Thank you so much for all your time and hard work Elsie, we love having you on the team! For more information about volunteering at CCA email firstname.lastname@example.org or call us on 020 7485 3386.
